Artistic research & Discourse
We are committed to the qualitative development of the art form Young Dance. Important building blocks here are formats for artistic research/research. Our studios are characterized by the fact that artistic research questions are examined together with children. In laboratories, on the other hand, artists conduct research in an open rehearsal setting to which young audiences are occasionally invited.
In 2026 we have the opportunity to offer a residence for the first time: In cooperation with FELD Theater, we are awarding a research contract in the field of ‘Intergenerational Theatre Work’.
All formats have in common, without being able to pursue a question without first printing. This increases the joy of experimentation, leads to unexpected alliances, pushes aesthetic boundaries: In this way, high-quality and courageous work is created. We award contracts to Berlin artists and transnational teams.
The artistic work is embedded in discourse and further education events. We are convinced that promoting aesthetic excellence also means docking with current, relevant discourses and deepening them. In this sense, we organize specialist days and symposium events (e.g. as part of the FRATZ Symposium). Furthermore, in 2025 we launched the program series Werkstätten Junger Tanz - it focuses on specific fields of work and is aimed at dance professionals, multipliers and mediators.

Completed projects
Nasheeka Nedsreal and Cintia Rangel conducted research in 2021 on how decolonial approaches can be implemented in work for a very young audience. This resulted in the production ‘Flip-Flop’, which won the Berlin IKARUS Prize of the expert jury as the best children’s play and tours internationally. Other laboratories were “The superpowers of the hitherto uncelebrated superheroes - aka Queerlab” (2020) with Caroline Alves, Iury Salustiano Trojaborg, Mareike Jung and “TAH DAM!” (2020) with ASSITEJ South Africa. Discourse events on this topic took place, for example, in the context of the symposium ‘Race – Class – Gender’ / FRATZ International 2020.
Previous specialist days were, for example: “The blurring of borders” (2023) - exchange on intergenerational dance and the handling of age indications with theatre o.N.; “Young Blood” (2023) – Perspectives on dance for young audiences in training with dance accomplices; Equity in dance (2023): Strategies for power-critical diversity in dance; “The Other Body? Dance and Racism Day” (2020) curated by Nora Amin with dance complicities.
