Roni Katz, Lee Méir and Joni Barnard are residency artists at the Junge Tanzhaus Berlin and develop a participatory performance for it. As part of this process, they offer workshops and other participatory events, such as Family Clubbing, to explore how adults and children can be involved together as an audience.

The work they develop – ‘Spark Flight’ – is a participatory performance at the intersection of ritual, festival, dance and live art. Conceived as a cross-generational social event, this work focuses on fire and explores its dual character: The light it gives and the shadow it casts. Fire as a symbol of warmth, communion and joy, but also as a force of transformation, liberation and burning of what we carry with us in the dark. The participants are not mere spectators, but active co-creators who go through a sequence of carefully guided phases: cooking together, transformation through costumes and a collective ritual in which difficulties – be they grief, frustration or whatever was brought along – are playfully turned outwards. At the center of the experience, the space opens up to a dance environment characterized by sound, music and light. Movement becomes a common language that connects the participants through rhythm, closeness and presence at the same time individually and as a community. ‘Spark flight’ is less about a spectacle and more about what has an effect. The participants go home with the awareness that they have been part of a temporary community and have been shaped by it; They take with them a feeling of warmth, connectedness and the quiet resonance of a shared experience.
